When you think of a pride of lions, you probably associate them with loyalty, hunting, and the wild. For a woman named Or Lazmi, these South African lions are just part of her family.
In the video below, posted on December 28, 2016, a biologist named Liz Bonnin prepares to step inside the lion enclosure in front of her to learn more about how Or became the leader of this pride.
“This is bonkers,” she mutters as she steps inside, but soon she grows hesitant. She isn’t sure how to greet each 17-month-old lion, but Or assures her that she will be okay.
Having a human lead a pride of lions is both controversial and somewhat dangerous, but Or insists that she has a special connection with the lions.
Or explains, “We have a very strong bond with this group,” adding, “They’ve known me as a constant dominant figure in their life since they were babies and that’s why I’m able to go so up close to them.”
Although Or is the leader of this lion pride, she notes that gaining their trust and respecting that they are still wild animals is important
